Five years ago today, the United States was attacked. War was declared on us and we were dragged into a global war on terrorism. Just under three thousand innocent civilians were killed before we realized what was going on. One of those people was Sonia Morales Puopolo.
Sonia was born and raised in Puerto Rico and later moved to Boston in her late teens where she met her husband, Dominic Puopolo at a Catholic School dance.
Sonia dedicated her life to helping others. She was a political activist as well as a philanthropist. She dedicated her life to giving to and inspiring others. In the words of former president Clinton, "She encouraged everyone to be the best they could be." She was a ballet dancer and was involved in many cultural and arts organizations. Miami Mayor Joe Carollo described her as "an extremely intelligent, classy lady....very warm, very caring."
Sonia was the mother of three adult children - Dominic Jr., Marc Anthony, and Sonia "Tita" Puopolo.
On the morning September 11, 2001, Sonia boarded American Airlines flight 11. She was to fly from Boston to Los Angeles to attend the Latin Grammy Awards and to visit her son. Instead, her flight was the first of two to be flown into the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan. She was likely one of the first victims of that day.
Sonia was one of almost 3,000 people who was taken from us on September 11, 2001. Never forget her. Never forget any of them.Labels: 9/11, America, Terrorism |
